Project Selah Sleep Pods: A Safe Place to Stabilize

Matthew’s Light has served the homeless community for over 13 years, with the last six here in Houston, reaching about 350 people a month through street outreach. Outreach builds trust. Project Selah is the next step on that trust: short-term stabilization housing that bridges the gap between the street and permanent housing.

How it works

We convert 40-foot steel shipping containers into seven private, lockable rooms each. Every pod has its own door directly to the outside — no shared hallway, no congregate beds. Residents arrive by referral, stabilize with daily meals, on-site support, and case management, and move on toward housing.

The pilot

Our proof-of-concept is a 14-bed pilot — two containers, seven pods each — building this winter. It is the bridge in Matthew’s Light’s three-step plan: (1) street outreach builds trust, (2) Selah stabilizes, (3) Cana Village is the long-term goal of a permanent housing community.

Why private rooms matter

Many of the people existing resources struggle to reach will not use traditional shelter, because congregate beds can feel unsafe. A private, lockable door changes that first night — and a safe first night makes everything after it possible.
